CULTURE NEWS

  • Wake Forest Comic-Con will take place on Saturday, Aug. 23 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Flaherty Park Community Center at 1226 N. White St.—organizers say the free event will showcase comic books, anime, toys, collectibles and more from over 30 vendors.  City of Wake Forest
  • The Town of Wake Forest announced today that Amy Pridgen is the new director of the Wake Forest Renaissance Centre, replacing Debbie Dunn who retired in July—she will coordinate arts programs, exhibits and rentals while partnering with community groups to expand local arts initiatives. Community members can meet Amy at a Meet & Greet on September 12 from 5-8 p.m.—the event will be held at the Renaissance Centre tent along East Owen Avenue.  City of Wake Forest
  • The Wake Forest Public Art Commission will host a free, family-friendly Community Celebration of the Arts at the Wake Forest Renaissance Centre on Saturday, Oct. 11 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.—an event featuring live music by Luke Vandergriff at noon and various art activities for all ages.  City of Wake Forest

EDUCATION NEWS

  • State leaders unveiled a five-year plan to improve North Carolina public schools after presenting it at Centennial Magnet Middle School yesterday—this plan sets a 92% graduation rate goal and outlines eight pillars including a new student information system and a virtual family academy to boost statewide education.   ABC 11

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Town of Wake Forest explained rules for temporary political signs for the Nov. 4 general election. Signs on private property can be put up now with owner permission and those along state roads can only be installed from Oct. 5 and taken down by Nov. 14 — signs must not block views, be too large or illuminated, and removing or changing them wrongly is a misdemeanor.  City of Wake Forest
