COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Wake Forest Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources will host the final Family Movie Night at Joyner Park, which will show Transformers One on Saturday, Aug. 2 at 8:30 p.m. Attendees are urged to arrive early for a 7:30 p.m. kids' pre-show and a meet and greet with Police Chief Julius Jefferson from 6:30—8:30 p.m. as viewing space may be limited.  City of Wake Forest
  • Former undercover FBI operative Tamer Elnoury, who infiltrated a terror cell in North America, will speak at the Renaissance Centre on Thursday, Sept. 11 at noon for first responders—seating is first-come, first-served. A second session for the public will take place at 7:30 p.m. with $20 tickets available from Tuesday, Aug. 26—tickets can be purchased at the RC Box Office or by calling the Centre.  City of Wake Forest

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Duke Energy said the electric grid held up overall (despite some brief outages in local neighborhoods) amid extreme heat last night. The company warned that electric bills may rise this week and advised customers to raise thermostats and use ceiling fans to save energy.  ABC 11

EDUCATION NEWS

  • State lawmakers in North Carolina moved closer to passing a $1 billion spending bill that funds basic government services—but leaves out larger teacher raises and bonuses. Wake County educators criticized the mini-budget — they warned that small step raises and $3,000 bonuses may not be enough to retain experienced teachers.  ABC 11

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Carolina SunRock, working for NCDOT, will restrict the Dr. Calvin Jones/NC 98 Bypass to one lane from Jones Dairy Road to Capital Boulevard/US 1 — operating Sundays to Thursdays from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. — for resurfacing work set to finish in late August, and motorists should plan alternate routes.  City of Wake Forest
