CRIME NEWS

  • Marine Diego Andres Martinez Duque from Camp LeJeune was charged after his high-speed unsafe lane change on I-40 westbound near mile marker 287 on Thursday caused his Honda to hit several vehicles—resulting in the death of fellow Marine Jesus Alexander Colin.  ABC 11

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The U.S. Department of Education announced over $6.1 billion in federal funding for schools, but Wake County Public School System and Durham Public Schools said they will not see the funds until next week + officials noted the money is needed to support students and teachers as the new school year approaches.  ABC 11

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Wake Forest Police remind residents that a town ordinance bans riding motorized scooters on sidewalks, greenways, parks, town streets, and other public areas to boost safety—those riding or allowing juveniles to ride in violation may face fines.  City of Wake Forest
  • Blythe Construction and Fulford & Jones will close the part of Brick Street from North White Street to Brewer Avenue on Monday, July 28, from 7 a.m.—5 p.m. to allow crews to mill and pave the roadway for the 2025 Wake Forest Road Resurfacing Project, and motorists are urged to avoid the area due to expected delays.  City of Wake Forest

  • Jackson Blake, a 21-year-old forward for the Hurricanes, signed an eight-year, $45 million contract extension on Thursday — his deal will start with the 2026-27 season. He finished his rookie season with 17 goals and 17 assists in 80 regular season games and three goals and three assists in 15 playoff contests.  ABC 11
