COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Towns across central North Carolina will celebrate Independence Day with fireworks shows on July 3 and July 4 and free public events including music, food, and family activities. Raleigh, Chapel Hill, Garner, Morrisville, Smithfield and Wendell each plan shows at parks and venues with fireworks set to start between 7 p.m. and 9:45 p.m.  ABC 11

CRIME NEWS

  • Two state troopers were dismissed from the North Carolina State Highway Patrol on June 16 after investigators found that misleading testimony surrounding the 2024 crash that killed Tyrone Mason led to 180 cases being dismissed—both officers had been on leave since January.  ABC 11

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Applications Analyst II Juan Garcia graduated from UNC School of Government’s CGCIO™ Program on Monday, June 23—finishing a 240-hour course designed to prepare IT professionals for public service. More than 60 graduates from across the country completed this rigorous program—underscoring Wake Forest’s commitment to effective government technology.  City of Wake Forest
  • Officer C. Craig was named as the 2025 CIT Officer of the Year by the Wake Forest Police Department after he intervened on August 15 when he stopped a young female from attempting suicide along NC 98 Bypass—he persuaded her to call her family and get help. His quick response shows the impact of the specialized CIT training provided to officers.  City of Wake Forest
  • Wake Forest is accepting applications for its second annual Citizen’s Academy, a seven-week course for local residents and business owners aged 18 or older to learn about town government programs and services. Classes will meet Thursdays from Sept. 4 — Oct. 23 at 6 p.m. — 8 p.m. with a light meal served at 5:30 p.m. and no session on Sept. 11; applications are due Aug. 1.  City of Wake Forest

HEALTH NEWS

  • During the heat wave, local residents are urged to drink 96oz of water daily and stay cool with air conditioning or fans—experts caution that older adults and pets face higher risks without proper cooling.  ABC 11
