ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission has offered guidance for local livestock owners on how to protect animals from black bears — the bears are mostly plant-eaters but can also prey on eggs and small livestock. The commission advises removing feed like grains and corn to lower the bears’ attraction and reduce risk. The Wake Weekly
- ➤ Wake County stopped hazardous waste collection at the North Wake Facility after a Jan. 22 fire damaged the storage building at 9037 Deponie Drive in Raleigh. The county set up Saturday-only collection on March 15 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at a temporary facility + residents in Apex and Wendell have alternative disposal options. The Wake Weekly

- ➤ A Zebulon woman lost her job at the NC Department of Health and Human Services due to federal funding cuts and filed for unemployment on April 13th but was initially denied—until ABC11 Troubleshooter Diane Wilson helped her appeal the decision. After an investigation, the NC Department of Commerce Division of Employment Security confirmed her eligibility and processed benefits for the weeks she filed, and she advises others to keep filing. - ➤ Raleigh, Wake County and the public school system leaders met Thursday at the Raleigh Convention Center—focusing on rapid growth, school funding and aging facilities—while outlining plans to boost affordable housing, improve transportation and upgrade school infrastructure through 2026. ABC 11
