- ➤ The Town of Wake Forest and local veterans’ groups will hold the 61st Memorial Flag-Raising Ceremony at Town Hall's Centennial Plaza on Monday, June 2 at 11 a.m. to honor US Army veteran Edgar Paul Garrison, Jr. His family will join in songs, special remarks and a wreath laying while the Fire Department Honor Guard raises both flags+the American flag will be given to the Garrison family at the next ceremony on July 7. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Wake County School District is updating its cellphone policy to require students to silence phones, tablets & smartwatches and store them in backpacks or lockers following a teacher survey conducted on May 27th. The plan adds a Governor Advisory Council recommendation to keep parent contact open and will cost $150,000, while enforcement details remain in progress. ABC 11

- ➤ Governor Josh Stein awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine to 104-year-old Maj. Joe Balogh—a pilot and WWII veteran—to honor his service during Military Appreciation Month. The Wake Weekly
- ➤ Wake Forest officials report progress on the South Franklin Street Widening Project as approvals clear the way for future work — decorative streetlights will soon be installed while utility revisions resolve conflicts for retaining wall construction. Pipe crews returned the week of May 26, wall construction begins the week of June 2, and roadway work is expected mid-June with substantial completion planned for the end of September and final work finishing in late October or early November. - ➤ The U.S. Justice Department filed a lawsuit against North Carolina and its State Board of Elections on May 27 for failing to collect required identifying information on voter registration forms—officials are reviewing the complaint to bring the state into compliance with federal law. ABC 11
- ➤ Town officials said J.M. Thompson Company is working on Phase 1 improvements at Miller Park at 401 Elm Avenue with stream restoration about 75% complete and grading for a greenway trail underway—installations of a boardwalk and pedestrian bridge will begin in June with full park reopening expected by winter. SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ Wake Forest Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources will accept applications for Youth Fall Baseball, Softball, and T-Ball for players aged 4–16 from June 1 to 7 for local residents and from June 8 to 30 for others—participants must prove their age by April 30 with a birth certificate while fees are $60 for residents and $100 for non-residents. The department will provide skills evaluations, draft information, and wait lists as some age groups fill before the registration period ends. City of Wake Forest
