  • Wake Forest officials reminded local dog owners to obey Wake County’s leash law after residents complained about dogs running at large in town parks and along greenways—owners risked a $100 fine for a first violation. Flaherty Dog Park at 1100 N. White St. provided a free, safe place for dogs to run off-leash from dawn to dusk.  City of Wake Forest

CRIME NEWS

  • Deputies arrested 19-year-old Alicia O'Neil and 32-year-old Dominique Stone on Wednesday for an April 23 incident on Yakimas Road where a car crashed into a mailbox and bullet holes struck a nearby home, and they later arrested 20-year-old Chase Williams in connection with an April 8 shooting into a home (no one was injured).  ABC 11

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey announced today that he fined The Members Insurance Co. and Universal Insurance Co. $113,000 after a market conduct examination + both companies are owned by Auto Club Group and licensed to write private passenger auto and homeowners’ policies.  The Wake Weekly
  • Wake County officials say children and teens in foster care need safe and stable homes while their families work on reunification—local residents are urged to consider becoming foster parents.  The Wake Weekly
  • The Wake Forest Historic Preservation Program will host a Historic Tax Credit Webinar on Wednesday, May 21 from noon to 1 p.m. for owners of contributing properties and those on the National Register — the free session will discuss program details and showcase successful projects to help guide future applications — and advance registration is required.  City of Wake Forest

HEALTH NEWS

  • Operation Fan Heat Relief is underway in North Carolina as the Department of Health and Human Services’ Division of Aging and Adult Services partners with local agencies + energy companies to distribute thousands of fans to people 60 and older and adults with disabilities from May 1 to Oct. 31.  ABC 11

SPORTS NEWS

  • Wake Forest Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources will host a Bass Fishing Tournament for ages 13 and older and a non-competitive Youth Fishing Tournament for ages 12 and under from June 16 to 29 — local anglers will use public fisheries in Wake and Franklin County — with online registration open until June 2. Participants in the bass event will pay $10 and youth entrants $5 — scales and gift bags will be picked up on June 12 from 10 a.m. to noon and 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Flaherty Park Community Center — and all contestants can share photos of their catch online.  City of Wake Forest
  • The Franklin Academy Patriots won a 9+0 conference game over Falls Lake Academy on April 25 to remain undefeated. Coach Lindsay Graham used time on the pitch to teach new positions while the team now holds a 15-0 overall record and 9-0 in conference play.  The Wake Weekly
