ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Advocates and lawmakers marked April as Distracted Driving Awareness Month in North Carolina and warned that 30 fatal incidents so far—compared to 147 last year—show a moment’s distraction can be deadly. They said using a cell phone, eating, or fiddling with controls takes drivers’ eyes off the road. ABC 11
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Wake County School Superintendent Robert Taylor’s proposed budget for next school year removes the district’s dental insurance contribution—saving $2.5 million while causing an extra cost of $28 monthly per employee. After board members and the public gave input, Chair Chris Heagarty noted concerns about the added expenses. The Wake Weekly
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ North Carolina Supreme Court ruled yesterday that tens of thousands of ballots challenged in the race for a court seat will stay in the count while voters from military and overseas groups have 30 days to provide a photo ID—ballots cast by voters who have never lived here were removed. The decision partly reverses an appeals court ruling and leaves the contest very close as legal review continues. ABC 11
- ➤ Wake Forest named Evelyn Wright as its new Town Clerk after an exhaustive search, replacing Terry Savary who retired in December. She will manage Board of Commissioners meeting notices, record proceedings, and support town document services. City of Wake Forest
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ North Carolina Health and Human Services said on Thursday that more than 500 people died of the flu during the 2024-2025 respiratory virus season. Federal funding cuts have threatened jobs & weakened health programs that provide immunizations and track diseases statewide. The Wake Weekly
